Amateur astronomers often record astronomical images of a quality rivaling professional telescopes. However, for a number of reasons, they have lagged behind in the field of recording spectra of astronomical sources.

Spectroscopy is the technique of obtaining and recording the spectra of light sources. A spectrum is the continuum of colors (as in a rainbow) formed when light is dispersed so that its component wavelengths are arranged in order.
